Networking is basically a process through which various computers are interconnected. It allows computers to communicate with each other and share resources, peripherals etc.

 Computer network can be divided into many categories and sizes. They are classified on the   basis of:

- Scale

- Connection methods

- Functional relationship

- Network topology

The types of network are :

- Local area network (LAN)
- Campus area network (CAN)
- Internetwork
- wide area network (WAN)

               What is meant by Networking?

When two or more computers communicate directly or exchange information, it is called computer networking. In its early days, computers, even large ones, were isolated- they could be used only by one individual or one organisation. There was no link between one computer and another. With improvement in technology, it has become possible to link together several computers, and a user on one system could use facilities on other systems in the network. The area covered by a network now ranges from a university campus to several continents.

Networks consist of the computers, wiring, and other devices, such as hubs, switches and routers, that make up the network infrastructure. Some devices, such as network interface cards, serve as the computers connection to the network. Devices such as switches and routers provide traffic- control strategies for the network. All sorts of different technologies can actually be employed to move data from one place to another, including wires, radio waves, and even microwave technology
